How to Find Short-Term and Gig Work Without Getting Scammed

Short-term work attracts the most advance-fee fraud of any category. How to write a listing that gets picked, and the three signals that mean you should walk away from an offer.

Gig work is the fastest category to get hired in and the one with the most fraud, and those two facts are related: speed is exactly what a scam needs.

Three signals that mean stop

You are asked to pay anything. Registration, training, materials, a background check, a deposit on equipment. Legitimate work pays you; it does not invoice you first. This single rule catches most of it.

You are asked to receive and forward money, or to accept a cheque and send part of it on. That is money laundering, the cheque will bounce, and the loss lands on you.

The pay is far above the going rate for the work. Nobody pays triple for unskilled labour by accident.

Write availability, not ambition

If you are offering yourself, lead with what you can do and when you are free. "Weekday evenings and all Saturday, own transport, can lift" gets hired. A paragraph about being hardworking and reliable does not, because everybody writes it.

Check the offer against the listing

A common pattern is a legitimate-looking advertisement followed by a message offering something different — different pay, different work, different hours. That mismatch is the tell. A real employer's first message is about the job they advertised.

Take the identifiable jobs

Work for somebody with a business name, a fixed address, or a listing history you can look at beats work for an anonymous contact offering more money. On this site you can see a poster's other listings and any reviews left by people who actually dealt with them — and reviews here cannot be left by anyone else.

Agree the number before you start

Rate, total hours or scope, and when payment happens — in writing, before the first hour. Most gig disputes are not fraud; they are two people who never agreed what "a day's work" meant.

Keep the conversation on the platform

A request to move immediately to a private channel, before anything is agreed, is the most common precursor to a scam here. There is no need: you can arrange everything through messages without giving out a number, and numbers are exchanged when you both confirm the deal.

Build something out of the small jobs

The value of gig work is rarely the day rate. It is that three satisfied one-day clients become a reference, a repeat booking and a review — and a review here can only be left by somebody you actually worked for. Ask for one at the end of a job that went well, while they still remember it. Ten of those turn casual work into a service listing people seek out.

Look in Gigs, or post what you are offering as a new listing.
